Die gesetzlichen Rahmenbedingungen für die Bewirtschaftung des Waldes in Europa beinhalten in der Regel, dass der Wald so zu bewirtschaften ist, dass er seine Funktionen dauernd und uneingeschränkt erfüllen kann.

## Risikominimierung in Naturwaldreservaten

Es gelten die Bestimmungen des NCS Kap. [5.6.2](https://methodologies.nature-value.org/fnr/fnr_de/readme/6-quantification/spaces/b021HTaWqvtGHZt5ri0G/pages/6WcX0YkG01oc7BBdPvWC#id-5.6.2-reversals) zur Sicherung der Integrität des Projektregisters.

**«Offizielle» Reservate**: Subventionen zur Einrichtung von Waldreservaten haben den Zweck, die Biodiversität zu fördern. Es gibt Verträge mit dem Staat oder andere langfristige Bindungen mit öffentlich-rechtlicher Grundlage. Beispiele hierfür sind in Deutschland Ausgleichsflächen mit Ökopunkten oder Entschädigungen in der Schweiz. Die Laufzeit beträgt mindestens 50 Jahre. Naturwaldreservate mit institutionellem Status können als Individualprojekte durch die Eigentümer oder im Rahmen eines IIFM-Projektes und innerhalb eines Programms durchgeführt werden.  Im Fall eines offiziellen Schutzstatus ist eine zusätzliche behördliche Absicherung des Projektes gegeben.

Im Fall der Aufhebung eines Naturwaldreservates  ist die Klimaintegrität zu wahren durch Fortführung ohne offiziellen Status, andernfalls durch Ausgleich der annullierten VER.
